Privacy Policy
Book in Hour turns books you upload into audio. This page says what we keep about you, who helps us process it and how you can have it deleted. Short version: your books stay yours, we do not sell data and we do not show ads.
What we store
- The books you upload (the EPUB file and the text we extract from it).
- What we generate from them: retelling text, summaries, audio files and sentence timings.
- Your questions and the answers you get, with the position in the book where you asked.
- Anonymous usage events, such as opening the app, starting or pausing playback, or asking a question. They carry a random install identifier, not your name or e-mail, and never the text of a book or a question.
- Diagnostics: crash, hang and error reports from the app, to fix bugs.
- Purchase records: which product you bought and whether it is active. Payment details never reach us; Apple or Google handle them.
- If you sign in with Apple: the identifier Apple gives us for you, and the e-mail or relay address if you choose to share it.
- Ordinary server logs (IP address, time, request) kept for a short time for security.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data or share your books with other users.
- We do not show advertising and the app contains no advertising or cross-app tracking SDKs.
- We do not use your books to train models ourselves.
- This website uses no analytics and sets one cookie only to remember your language.
Who processes your data
We use these processors to run the service. Each receives only what it needs.
- Cloudflare: network proxy and R2 storage, where your generated audio is kept.
- Our own servers in the EU (rented from Hetzner): the app backend, your books and text, and the speech synthesis that turns text into audio.
- A large language model provider, reached through our own gateway: it receives passages of your book and your questions to write the retelling and the answers.
- Apple and Google: purchases, subscriptions and sign-in. Their own privacy policies apply.
- Speech recognition for your questions runs on your phone. Depending on your device and settings, the operating system may use Apple's or Google's recognition service; we receive only the resulting text.
How long we keep it
- Books, generated text and audio, and questions and answers: until you delete them or your account.
- Diagnostics: 90 days.
- Anonymous usage events: up to 24 months.
- Purchase records: as long as the law requires for accounting.
- Server logs: a few weeks.
Deleting your data
You can delete a book in the app, or your whole account in Settings. Deleting the account removes your books, the generated audio in storage, your questions and answers and your account record, and we revoke the Sign in with Apple link. You can also write to [email protected] from the address you used and we will do it for you within 30 days. Backups are overwritten on their normal cycle.
Under the GDPR and similar laws you can also ask for a copy of your data, a correction, or object to a use. Write to [email protected]. You may complain to your data protection authority.
Children
The service is not directed at children under 13, or under 16 where local law sets that age. If you think a child has given us data, write to us and we will delete it.
Changes and contact
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the date at the top and tell you in the app. Questions: [email protected].
